Climbing for Breast Cancer Care

Picture
Breast cancer affects one in eight women during their lives. My cousin, Selina (more like a sister to me), was disgnosed with breast cancer a few years ago. A serious operation to remove both breasts and subsequent radiotherapy to remove a recurrence of lumps  has shown me how fragile the everyday lives we lead can be. She has also shown me how strong the human spirit is.....

I believe in making the most of every opportunity we have, because you never know what awaits you around the corner. I also believe that you can achieve whatever you want to if you put your mind to it.

Breast Cancer Care is just a phone call or mouse click away for anyone living with breast cancer. Their free Helpline and information-packed website offer a friendly ear and expert guidance to people dealing with the turmoil of this life-threatening illness. Across the UK they also offer professional support through a range of confidential, face-to-face services, helping people every step of the way.

Link to Life - Mauritius

One third of the funds raised through JustGiving will go to the Mauritian charity Link-To-Life.

The increase in the incidence of breast cancer in Mauritius in the last 20 years is alarming. The awareness of Mauritian men and women to the dangers of the disease and the need for screening and self inspection must be improved.

Jaysen will be working with Link-to-life to this effect.

Link to Life was set up in the year 2003 by a group of persons including cancer survivors.  Its main purpose is to provide support and counselling to cancer patients and their families.

Its main activities are:-

- Provide free transport facilities to patients from vulnerable groups to attend chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments.

- Provide counselling and help to patients and their families.

- L’ecoute (listening) at Victoria Hospital twice a week by volunteers trained in counselling.

- Regular Group Therapy

-Cancer awareness programmes island wide

-Cancer control through free breast cancer screening by a professional medical practitioner

-Database of all women screened by Link to Life. To date 902 women have been screened and about 2 -3 % doubtful cases among these women were referred to the hospital for further investigation.

-Provide prosthesis and wigs

Jaysen will be working with Link to Life to raise awareness and raise fund to purchase a much-needed mammogram to enable screening for the women of Mauritius.
